Lately I have been so into self-care. For those of you that don’t know much about my life, I’ve been guilty of treating myself pretty terribly most of my life. A lot of that comes with having a Type-A personality, but some of it has popped up through running, school, and just general life stressors. This past year was kind of my breaking point and I knew that some major changes were needed. I used to always think that unless I was miserable, I wasn’t working hard enough. Lately I’ve learned that that’s a really sad way to live and I need to be better about giving myself some room to breathe.
Just this morning I listened to the Nutrition Matters podcast (have I mentioned I’m obsessed with podcasts?) and the wise Julie Duffy Dillon, host of the Love, Food podcast said, “It’s not letting yourself go, it’s letting yourself be.” Which is SO TRUE you guys. Eating that dessert before bed or allowing yourself an extra hour of sleep instead of a workout or giving yourself the freedom to visit a friend instead of spending hours at work is perfectly okay. Giving yourself the freedom to relax and do things that make your heart happy is such an important part of health. Not just what you eat and how much you exercise.
So my question to you is: What is your favorite way to practice self-care? Mine is definitely slow, easy mornings listening to podcasts, drinking coffee, maybe reading a book, and just spending an hour or so allowing myself to slowly jump into the day. What’s yours?
